I think that part of the reason that i got in was because i am a minority(Native American), they also gave me an academic scholarship for minorities. I also had really stellar teacher recommendations. I didnt have a huge amount of honors or awards, but i was really involved in clubs. I didnt have a really high GPA (3.3) but i did have a 1240 on my SAT's.

Strong high school prep curriculum-I'd say at least 2 or 3 AP courses (if your high school offers them). Good test scores will always help.

if you want to get in from out of state make sure you have a very high GPA and an adequate SAT/ACT score. There is also an essay so make sure to write that to the best of your ability. If you live in VA it is not overly competative to get in.

My SAT's blew and my essay wasn't anything to brag about, but, my GPA was pretty good and Resume was outstanding. The Admissions Officers want to have people at JMU who are going to be involved, so they want to see a Resume. Also, I would apply early action, that's what I did and I got in early.
